David Michael Carrow, 77, of Millville, NJ, passed away on August 8, 2020 from a prolonged illness. David was a visionary artist and sculptor who produced many notable works of sculpture renowned for their scale, humor, and ingenuity.

David was born in 1942 in Flushing, NY to the late Milton Carrow and Betsey Hall Carrow and grew up in Rockland County, NY. After graduating from Nyack High School, he attended Oberlin College and Columbia University, earning a B.A. in General Studies in 1971. He studied drawing, painting, sculpture and art history at the New York Studio School in Manhattan and went on to receive his MFA from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro in 1975. In addition to being a prolific sculptor, he worked as an ironworker, steel fabricator, college teacher, builder/renovator, as well as crewman on Block Island ferries and cargo ships on the Great Lakes.

David was a veteran of the US Navy, serving as Assistant Navigator on the U.S.S. Pitkin County (LST-1082) in the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War, 1968-70.

From 1981 to 2004, David was the Facilities Manager and Special Projects Supervisor for the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture (now The Seward Johnson Atelier), Hamilton, NJ. He was deeply involved in the growth and development of the Atelier and it was during this time that he created many of his major sculptures, mainly in his favorite medium, steel. Throughout this period he worked as a consultant and fabricator for noted sculptor, Melvin Edwards. In 2001 he was awarded a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, which resulted in one of his best loved pieces, "Curious Cabinet."

From 2006 to 2017, David and his wife, artist Michelle Post, organized, curated and participated with new works in eight Highwater Sculpture Invitationals at various galleries and museums in New Jersey.

David Carrow was a true renaissance man: strong, funny, kind, brilliant, artistic, humble, loyal and an amazing husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend and colleague. Art was David's passion. He lived a full and vigorous life and will be missed by his adoring family, friends, and fans.

David is survived by his wife, Michelle (Shaudys) Post, Millville, NJ; daughter Olivia Carrow, Moline, IL; son Spencer Carrow, Philadelphia, PA; stepdaughter Sara (Post) Feliciano and her husband Ruben Feliciano, Levittown, PA; stepson David Dempewolf and his wife Yuka Yokoyama, Philadelphia, PA; sister Deborah (Carrow) Glik and her husband Chris Glik, Los Angeles, CA; sister Emily Carrow and her husband Bill Organek, Higganum, CT; brother James Carrow, Riverside, CA; granddaughters Brielle Simon, Jada Simon and Amariah McKnight, and nephews Bram Glik and Toby Glik.
